40 46
Part of this report will contain description of the different types of
maps available and the extent of their coverage. No attempt will be made to
show specimens of these publications, but they are available for examination
at this meeting. (On table to right)
The subcommittee, before going into further details of this report wishes
to commend the efforts of Mr. James Lawson and Alfred Stiefel of the U. S.
Geological Survey, Messrs. Wilson, Pyle, Brown, Newman, and Curry of the
Corps of Engineers for their efforts in assembling the material for this
report.
DESCRIPTION OF INVENTORY OF ASSESSIONED MAPS TO DATE
STATUS OF TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING
Our investigation of the status of topographic mapping in the Arkansas -
White -Red River Basin area has of necessity been rather hurried. The
mapping data as shown on this map of the basin area has been compiled from
the files and records of the Topographic Division of the Geological Survey,
the files and records of the Corps of Engineers, by our representative at
the offices of the Tulsa, Little Rock, Memphis and Vicksburg Districts,
from mapping data furnished us by the Corps of Engineers, New Orleans and
Albuquerque Districts, from the Bureau of Reclamation offices in the basin
area, and from data submitted by State agencies.
Letters were sent to the major oil companies and to state and private
agencies having holdings or jurisdiction in the Basin area requesting
transcripts of any mapping activities by their organizations, such material
to be submitted in specific categories such as topographic maps with scale
contour interval; geologic maps, planimetric maps, river surveys, etc.;
also all photographic coverage in the area, giving focal length of camera
and flight altitude.
This status of mapping in the basin area, at scales of 1:62500 or
larger may contain a few discrepancies or omissions, because we have not
yet received replies to all our letters requesting information on this
subject. Any such mapping, however, is not expected to change the status
of mapping indicated on this chart to any great extent, as the chart includes
the mapping accomplished by the Federal Agencies in the basin area, and they
are the principal topographic mapping agencies at the present time.
This map on the scale of 1:1,000,000 covers the entire Arkansas- White-
Red River Basin area. The boundaries of each river basin area, being
indicated by the dashed black lines.
The color schemes indicate the classes and types of mapping in the
basin area, as defined in the index.
The black dots show the location of existing levees and levees under
construction along the rivers and flood plains in the lower basin area.
The black lines along some of the streams in the basin area indicate
that river surveys have been accomplished on these streams. The usual _
procedure in making these river surveys has been to obtain the river profile
C-2
