feet per second, this point is 100 miles from the <br />headgate, and is practically the end of the canal as far <br />as general service is concerned, although a small quan- <br />tity of water is still carried through to the extreme end <br />to serve one irrigator who has a water right on Big Sandy. <br />This lower portion of the canal is, therefore, merely a <br />farm lateral to all intents and purposes, and there is <br />excessive loss by seepage and evaporation in supply- <br />ing this water right over such an unusual distance. <br />GENERAL DIMENSIONS. <br />From the headgate to Gageby the bottom width is 50 <br />feet, and the full depth of water carried is 6 feet. From <br />Gageby to Graveyard Creek the bottom width is 20.5 <br />feet. And the depth is maintained at 6 feet. From Grave- <br />yard Creek to the end, at Wheatridge Lateral, the depth <br />is reduced to 4 feet, and the bottom width is but 10 feet. <br />These are the dimensions given by the Superintendent. <br />AREA COMMANDED. <br />The total area of land lying under the Fort Lyon Canal, <br />from its head to Big Sandy Creek, between the canal <br />and the north bank of the river, excluding the area un- <br />der the Amity Canal, is approximately 157,477 acres. <br />This was determined by planimeter measurement on <br />the large map of the Valley in the Company's office. <br />The total area under the canal to which water rights are <br />applied is 78,600 acres, or a little less than half of the <br />area commanded, assuming that all land under the ca- <br />nal could be classed as irrigable. <br />24 <br />
