FOREWORD
The current board members felt that it was important
and fitting to recognize the past 100 years existence of
the Fort Lyon Canal Company. A legacy was passed on
that virtually guaranteed the prosperity of the farmland
served by the canal system. One can hardly imagine
what the Lower Arkansas Valley would be like without
this foresight and vision. It is our hope that by preserv-
ing these efforts in book form, future generations will be
able to appreciate the labors of past generations. Joe
Cline, President, Fort Lyon Canal Board Of Directors.
DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to those possessing the fore-
sight to see the potential of Arkansas River water,
thereby bringing about the Fort Lyon Canal; to those
assuming the responsibility over the maintenance of a
valuable resource; and to those who have both finan-
cially and through personal endeavor supported the
preserving of a rich heritage for future generations.
This book is dedicated, then, to such individuals as
Arthur Esgar, Dr. J. S. Hasty and Ray McGrath for their
long service on the board to such individuals as H. D.
Amsley and Jennie Simmons as they toiled so faithfully
in the employment of the Fort Lyon Canal Company;
and to the likes of Frank Kreybill who both served on
the board and as an employee.
