15. Silting of reservoirs,. Evidence clearly indicates that the
deposition of silt and boulders would limit the economic life of any
flood - control reservoir. One silt storage reservoir, on Cold Spring
Gulch, a tributary of Bear Creek, was almost completely filled in the
3 -year period, 1935 to 1939, inclusive. It is believed that this was
largely filled during the flood of September 2, 1939, as that is the only
flood known to have occurred during that period.
16. Weather.- There are at present no Weather Bureau stations lo-
cated in the Bear Creek Basin. The records at the Idaho Springs station
in the Clear Creek Basin, which is immediately north of the Bear Creek
Basin, are considered to be more representative for this basin than
those of the Denver station which is in the plains area. With the ex-
ception of the years 1901 to 1904, inclusive, the record at Idaho Springs
extends from 1997 to date.
17. The precipitation ranges from a maximum of 24.79 inches in 1995
to a minimum of 9.74 inches in 1993. The mean annual precipitation is
15,72 inches, with 74 percent occurring during the period April 1 to
September 30, inclusive.
19. The temperature records at Idaho Springs vary from a maximum
of 90 degrees above zero to a minimum of 29 degrees below zero, with a
mean annual temperature of 43.1 degrees. July is the warmest month with
a mean temperature of 62.1 degrees, while December and January are the
coldest months with a mean temperature of 27.0 degrees. The average
growing season is 121 days.,
19. Stream flow,- The U. S. Geological Survey in conjunction with
the state of Colorado has maintained gaging stations on Bear Creek at
Morrison from August 1997 to September 1991, May 1895 to March 1902, and
from 1919 to date. Between 1919 and 1934, a station was maintained at
Idledale, but it was abandoned and a new one installed at Morrison. The
records at Idledalc and Morrison are considered to be comparable. A
station has also been maintained at Sheridan Junction, about 0.75 mile
w6
