Geography.- 11in area drained by Bear Creek lies on the eastern <br />slope of the Rocky Mountains southwest of Denver, Colo„ The basin is <br />bounded on the north by the Clear Creek Basin, on the south by the basin <br />of the North Fork of the South Platte River and on the east by the South <br />Platte River Basin. Tributaries of the north Fork of the South Platte <br />River and of Clear Creek extend north and south, respectively, to form <br />the western boundary. <br />6. Bear Creek rises in Summit Lake on the northwest slopes of Mount <br />Evans at an elevation of 12,740 feet m.s.l., and flows eastward to join <br />the South Platte River near Sheridan Junction, Colo., a few miles south of <br />the Denver city limits, The total length from its source to the con- <br />fluence with the South Platte River is approximately 45 miles. The basin <br />is roughly leaf - shaped with the widest portion about the middle. The <br />drainage area includes 265 square miles. <br />7. Federal reservations.- The Fort Logan Military Reservation is <br />located near the extreme eastern tip of the basin, and the Arapaho <br />National Forest covers a portion of the western part of the basin. (See <br />map, plate I.) <br />g. Topography. -- With the exception of a few square miles near the <br />mouth of Bear Creek, the basin is mountainous, with approximately 92 per- <br />cent of the area above an altitude of 7,000 feet. The basin is characterized <br />by steep, narrow valleys until it suddenly emerges on the plains near the <br />-3-- <br />
