The COGCC'is.not a.party in this matter, nor have
we formally objected or intervened: however as the agency that regulates oil and gas
operations, imludirig.the gas wells which source the water in question, I would like to
bring to your attenflon sloMe of -our concerns regarding use of the water that is co-
produced with oil- and gas. These concerns revolve around the quality of the water
and the need for proper disposal of 'wastes associated with the oil and gas industry,
and have been arranged into the. following topics:
• Sampling And Analysis To Demonstrate Suitability Of The Water For Intended
Uses.
a Produced Water..Generaliy Is Not Suitable For Most Beneficial Uses.
a High Cost Of Proper Disposai Of Produced Water.
a Ensure That Obtaining The Right'To Beneficially Use Produced Water is Not A
Loophole For improper Disposal.
SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS TO DEMONSTRATE SUITABILITY OF THE WATER FOR
INTENDED USES.
The water far which a right to use is being sought i5 derived from the coal beds
within the Cretaceous aged Fruitland Formation and is primarily a sodium-
bicarbonate type water. COG CC records indicate that the total dissolved solids
(TDS) of the water from the various source wells range from 450 milligrams per liter
(mg,1l) up to 2,500 mgll. Because of this wide range in water duality and because
oePARTMF.N T OF NATURAL RESOURCES; . %.so S.
