Glossary of Terms <br />Glossary <br />Cartwheeling-a freestyle trick where the boat is rotated end for end vertically in a fashion similar <br />to that of a child doing a cartwheel on the ground. <br />Eddy-a region of the river that is protected from the river's flow. Often chazacterized by flow <br />sepazation boundaries known as eddy ]ines and flow reversal. <br />Freestyle kayaking-a competitive event held on whitewater where paddlers aze judged based on <br />the quantity, style, and difficulty of tricks accomplished in a given time period. Usually held on <br />a large hydraulic feature. <br />Playboating-a form of recreational kayaking that focuses on tricks and surfing for recreation. <br />Slalom kayaking-a competitive event held on whitewater where paddlers aze timed and judged as <br />they race through a section of obstacles hung from wires above the river. <br />Squirt Boating-a style of kayaking practiced in extremely small, extremely slim boats that are <br />designed to do tricks while submerged. This event relies heavily on fast �vater that has up and <br />down surges and strong eddy lines. <br />Standing wave-a wave on a river that does not move with relation to points on the river's bank. <br />Surf wave-a standing wave in a river that has the size and gradient necessary for a kayak to <br />remain on the wave, in the direct river's cunent, without forward propulsion. <br />Whitewater Rodeo-a freestyle Qvent. <br />-21- <br />
