RESULTS
Habitat Mapping
The entire length of the South Fork of the South Platte River on the ranch property was mapped
on 26 September 2000. Mapped channel length on the property was 1911 feet and averaged
approximately 19 feet wide. This section of the stream consists of 21% pools, 49% riffles and
30% glides by surface area. Measured stream flow on the day of the site visit was approximately
13 cubic feet per second (cfs). Habitat mapping analysis outputs are located in Table 2 and
Figures 6 -11.
The stream channel is a typical meandering pattern with most pools occurring on meander bends
separated by riffle and glide habitats. Stream substrate was mainly gravel and cobble with a
moderate to high embeddedness from fine silts. The source of the silt appeared to be erosion of
the channel bank material. Vegetated sections of the stream bank can become undercut and then
slough off into the stream channel. There appears to be a lack of substantial, deep vegetative
root mass to stabilize the bank material in some of the undercut areas.
Minimum Flow Study, South Fork of the South Platte River — Final Report Page 9
February 19, 2001
