Woodward-Cly
1.0
INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL
Woodward-Clyde Consultants" (WCC) is please8 to submit this proposal to provide
geotechnical investigation and design services for Brush Hollow Dam. We have
prepazed this proposal based on your summary of work requested by the Colaracio State
Engineers Office and verbal discussions with your Mr. Troy Templeton on September 30
and October 7, 1993.
This technical proposal contai i (a) our uaderstanding of the praject
(Section 1.0); (b) our proposed d organization (Section 2.0); (c) WCC's
qualifications and experience and e e of key personnel designated for
this project (Section 3.0}; ( e t approach and scope of work; (e) a
discussion of WCC's approac to the problem aad recommeaded modifications to the
scope of work (Section 4.0); aund ( our estimated fees (Section 6.0).
1.2 UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROJECT
Brush Hollow Dam is a 60-foot high earthfill dam with a puddle corc. The crest width
is about 12 feet and the dam has a 3:1 (horizontal:vertical) upstream slope and a 2:1
downstream slope. According to available plans, the puddle core had a top width of
about 5 feet with 1:20 sideslopes down to natural ground aad a narrow trench core
below that level ta bedrock. The dam was appazently built in the 1920s.
Beaver Park Water Inc. (Water Company) has a few old photographs that show a sluice
in operation and horse drawn equipment being used to construct the dam. The
upstream slope was reportedIy covered by 9 inches of hand-placed riprap. In about 19$1,
the reservoir was drawn down far replacement of the gate operator with a hydraulic gate
operator at the crest of the dam. Some photographs of the dam during the drawdawn
in 1981 were available, showing the upstream slope to be irregularly shaped with
undulations parallel to the upstream face of the dam.
Woodward-Clyde Conwltarns
233601PR0.1 12-OS-93(E:52am)/RPT 1-1
