As I mentinoned on the phone, I am working cooperatively with the Colorado Water
:onservation Board (CWCB) staff to protect the natural lake level of Jewell Mountain Lake.
Jewell Mountain Lake, at six to eight acres in
size, is one of the lowest elevation, if not the
lowest elevation, natural lake in Colorado. Jewel
Mountain Lake is located on City of Boulder
Open Space and Mountain Parks property.
Specifically, the lake is located in Jefferson
County in the south half of Section 8, Township
2 South, Range 70 West.
If the CWCB completes a natural lake level
appropriation for Jewell Mountain Lake, the protection it affords will help protect water fowl habitat and
aquatic animal species such as the western painted turtle (Chrysemys picta bellii), tiger salamander,
(Ambystoma tigrinum), and leopard frog (Rana pipiens). A natural lake level filing will protect the
existing water level and, to the best of my knowledge, will not affect any existing water rights. Our
hydrologic evaluation of the area suggests that Jewell Mountain lake fills primarily from snow melt and
storm water runoff within its small watershed. No diversions are made to fill this lake. Because the
purpose of this project is to protect existing natural conditions, we have no intention to make any new
diversions or change water rights to put water into the lake. Even though the property is already
protected as open space, we believe that that the natural lake level appropriation is complementary to the
land protection as this helps underscore the unique natural value of the area. I have also attached a copy
f the CWCB's draft in progress of the executive summary for the project to provide you with additional
detail about this project.
Open Space & Mountain Parks...Pi se sqi ' a Wild Idea/
