The nearly four mile ditch is a carriage ditch
diverting water for irrigation purposes from McElmo Creek at a peak rate of 7.75 cfs, for an annual
average of 1,003 acre-feet. Construction of the ditch commenced in 1889 and the current ditch and
diversion structure are in need of rehabilitation. This project was responsible for the installation of nearly
four miles of PVC pipeline (15"/21" diameter), including valves, drains, vents and metered delivery
points; construction of a new diversion structure; and channel improvements. In doing so, this project
increased the efficiency of the ditch while reducing salinity impacts in the Colorado River, thereby
qualifying for a grant from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in the amount of
$391,000.
Project Data
Sponsor: Black Dike Pipeline County: Cortez Water Source: McElmo Creek
Company
Terms of Loan: $207,000 (initially $598,000), Substantial Completion Date: 10-1-2008
over 30 years @ 2.85%
Design Engineer: Harward Irrigation Systems Inc., Springville, UT
Construction Contractor: Harward Irrigation Systems Inc., Springville, UT
Lewis Excavation, Mancos, CO
Construction Elements: * Installation of 20,000 LF of PVC piping (15"/21" diam.)
* metered delivery points * construction of a new diversion structure
:. .. .

r:
• .;
.. ) ', t •,T. - ,
 4i .
.. A 5fi: K t 1 ,.
i3 ,
} ` i rn i,i _'
H T A !
Average Annual Diversion: 1,003 acre-feet
