METHODS OF DISPOSAL
There are three basic ways of disposing of drainage waters within an
area without damage to adjacent properties. These are identified here as:
(1) Acceptance with immediate discharging.
(2) Acceptance with retention and controlled discharging.
(3) Refusal of waters from outside the drainage area.
The first method allows the storm water to follow its natural path
through the drainage areas. The size of the channel or conduit is increased
sufficiently to accommodate the entire design storm.
The second method allows the storm water to follow its natural path to
retention ponds or lakes where the water is retained temporarily and dis-
charged under controlled conditions.
The third method does not allow storm water from outside the area to
follow its natural path through the area. Instead the water is intercepted
and by- passed around the congested area in open ditches or pipes to a dis-
charge point where no damage will result.
There are numerous combinations of these three basic methods that can
be used on any drainage program. In fact, most urban drainage programs are
a combination of all three methods.
- 14 -
