SECTION IV
WATER TRANSMISSION LINES
EXISTING SYSTEM
At the present time there are two pipes carrying water from the plant to
the vicinity of the storage tanks. One is a 20 -inch wood line installed in
1925 while the other is a 20 -inch cast iron pipe installed in 1942. Sections
of each of these lines were examined and found to be in excellent condition.
The character of the water is such that tuberculation is entirely absent from
both lines. These lines are not cross - connected until they reach the storage
tanks. For the purpose of designation, we shall refer to this pair of lines
jointly as transmission system "A ".
At a point adjacent to the storage tanks, the lines of transmission
system "A" are connected to a pair of pipelines continuing to the city. One
of these is a 24 -inch wood line constructed in 1925 while the other is a 12-
inch cast iron pipe installed in 1937. Recently, a 34 -inch steel pipeline
has been installed running from the vicinity of Eighth and Colorado to a
point approximately one mile east of the storage tanks. All three of these
lines are adequately cross - connected. We shall refer to these three pipe-
lines jointly as transmission system 'IV.
There exists, at the storage tanks where the two systems join, a concrete
structure in which the transition takes place and the systems are connected
to the storage tanks. This point is definitely a bottle -neck in the over -all
transmission system and is creating an appreciable loss of available head.
Due to the design at the time of the small tank construction and subsequent
additions with little thought of future needs, this point has resulted in a
conglomeration of valves, reducers and undersized cross - connections.
- 22 -
