- 4 - <br />Rough broken lands make up about nine per cent of the total. These are rock <br />outcrops frith very shallow soils, less than 10 inches deep. <br />Major range sites in the watershed area are: Mountain Grassland, Pine <br />Grassland, Mountain Slope (Browse) and Wet Meadow. Approximately five per <br />cent of the range area is in poor condition, 65 per cent in fair condition <br />and 30 per cent in good condition. Predominant grasses are blue grama, <br />mountain muhly, needlegrasses, Junegrass, and bluestems. Ponderosa pine <br />occurs on the Pine Grassland site and occasionally on the Mountain Slope <br />site. Oakbrush is the principal brush species on the Mountain Slope site. <br />M Land Use .- At the present time about 10 per cent of the watershed is in <br />cultivation. The main crops grown are small grain, alfalfa, meadow hay <br />tame pasture grasses, and corn silage. The closest United States TJeather Bureau <br />Climatological Station is located a few miles west of the watershed at <br />Monument, Colorado. The following data is based on records from the Monument <br />Station. <br />The average precipitation is 19.64 inches. About 75 per cent of this total <br />occurs from April through September. Most of the precipitation that causes <br />damaging floods occurs during the months of May, June, July, and August, <br />and are of the thunderstorm type with comparatively high intensity and short <br />duration. <br />The mean annual temperature is 45.2 degrees. The average length of the <br />growing season is 121 days, beginning May 24 and ending September 22. <br />Water Uses and Sources Surface water is used for irrigation by direct <br />diversions and for livestock by storing in small ponds. Ground grater is <br />used for watering livestock and for domestic purposes. <br />
