included in this report in the interest of supporting the design process. For a full
hydrological study please refer to a hydrological survey of the Animas River in and around
Durango CO., by Gary Thompson of W.W. Wheeler and Associates.
Visual inspection and discussions with the City's Public Works Director (3) suggest that the
Animas River, within this reach, can be characterized as sandy cobble and boulders
deposited on bedrock. The shale bedrock is visibly apparent during lower flows.
Smelter Boating Park
u
.. +r y ►f ? . r
op
T' y
The Smelter Boating Park, as noted, has a significant reputation among whitewater
enthusiasts. The site has been improved 6 times over the last 16 years. Many of these
improvements remain today and are certainly the reason Durango has been able to host the
quantity and caliber of whitewater competition that it historically has attracted.
The Smelter Boating Park encompasses a reach of the Animas River from just upstream of
the City's Municipal Waste Water Treatment Plant to an area just upstream of the City's
Chamber of Commerce. The right (West) bank of the Animas River in the upper part of
this reach is a site that has been a brownfield site in the past. The site has been cleaned and
capped. The upper reach of this bank has several areas that suffer from bank erosion. In
the past, erosion at this site has occasionally led to noted safety hazards to in- stream boaters.
The current configuration of this region has not been cited as a safety risk. The lower half
of the right bank is stable and high through the mid - section with some spreading in the
lower part of the reach.
The left (East) bank is made up of the Santa Rita Park itself. This bank has been repeatedly
reinforced and can be characterized as largely well armored. Improvements in the channel
5
