Associated Design Criteria:
• All in- stream work should conform strictly to permit requirements
and should have a minimum impact, both short and long term, on
the in- stream and riparian habitat.
• Improvements should promote responsible usage.
• Improvements should appear natural and provide for improvements
in the in- stream habitat
Commercial Rafting
Commercial rafting already exists on the Animas River within this reach.
Commercial rafting operations stand to gain considerably from improvements to this
section, which will not create a considerable reach of substantial whitewater but will
offer exposure, ease of accessibility, increased infrastructure, and the opportunity to
link on- the -water experiences with off - the -water experiences offered in the City such
as restaurants, parks, and other attractions. Commercial rafting operations typically
operate autonomously from the local government but require put -ins and take -outs
that can accommodate large numbers of customers and restroom facilities. On the
water the rafters will need an extended reach of river that is attractive for an
extended season and that provides a bouncy and attractive ride for their customers.
The difficultly level of the water should not exceed that which can be navigated by a
well - trained guide with a boat full of inexperienced users.
Associated Design Criteria:
• The river must provide attractive yet navigable whitewater for guided
raft trips.
• Put -in and Take -outs improvements must accommodate commercial
rafting operations.
• The river must serve as an attraction to passing customers. The park
should create an attraction that acts to increase business and
exposure for these commercial rafters.
13
