Benefits
The City of Durango is currently entertaining the idea of applying for an RICD on the Animas River. The
amount of flow has not yet been decided but the city is taking into consideration the needs and
requirements of upstream users as well as the economic and social benefits the RICD would offer. The
Animas River Task Force (ARTF), a coalition of user groups concerned about the Animas River, has also
been an integral force in designing an approach to the RICD that would address the ecological,
recreational, economic, and social impacts of an RICD.
The Animas River is a central component of the spirit of Durango, Durango's physical setting, economic
and social well - being, and designation as a recreational destination all pivot around a river with
guaranteed flow. The RICD would ensure that water remains in the river so that it continues to provide
the draw and atmosphere that makes Durango the place that it is.
Additionally, an RICD would ensure that Durango could maintain its status as an National Training
Center, offering year round training opportunities. This designation allows Durango to hold marquis
events that bring people, money, and a lively spirit to the city.
Page 1 of 1
._., .... rt;. . %e =. r ..r:_: -c._.  . i ;E ,`5 l .:.ikec:5t -> :I.. ,<- .F. >;c:r
http://www.animasriverl-,eeper.org/news-events/Benefits.htm 2/13/2007
