However, in
this highly visible (but not easily accessed) location, the recreational complex and
its associated lighting and traffic do not appear to be compatible with the wildlife
and open space values that should be preserved.
Option B - Ewing Mesa
The Ewing Mesa area is likely to be one of Durango's next major growth areas. On
this mesa perched high above, and not visible from, the Animas Valley /Highway
160 Corridor, there are several possible locations that would be suitable for a
Community or Regional Park combined with an extensive sports field complex.
Option C - Horse Gulch
The City currently is holding in reserve a property in the Horse Gulch area for a
reservoir. If the Animas - La Plata water project (ALP) is developed, the Horse
Gulch reservoir will not be needed and the area may be available for alternative
public uses, such as a recreation complex. This area is relatively isolated, but
initiating park development sufficiently in advance of other development will
assure that conflicts will be avoided. In the event the Horse Gulch reservoir is
developed, there may be other sites in Horse Gulch that are not in City ownership
but that could also be an alternative large park site.
Durango Parks Plan
27
Option D - Ridges Basin
This area, currently designated for the ALP Ridges Basin Reservoir, is somewhat
further from Durango, but still within the 10 -mile radius service area. If the ALP is
not implemented in its current configuration, this area could become available to
be acquired by the City and would be a suitable location for a Community or
Regional Park. If the ALP is implemented, the City should still be poised to take
advantage of the new reservoir as a recreation facility (that might include a park,
marina, etc.).
Option E - Koshak Mesa
With an anticipated new County bridge across the Animas River in a few years,
this area will have substantially improved access. A Community or Regional Park
could be developed in this location, but only if the City and County cooperatively
plan this area soon to avoid losing the opportunity to other types of development.
Option F - Grandview Area
Although the City of Durango has not yet extended any services it is considering
annexing this area adjacent to Highway 160 east at this time. If the City does
decide to expand in this direction, and no better site has been found for the
Community or Regional Park, the relatively cheaper land out in this area may
make such a Park possible.
3.5
PARK OPPORTUNITIES RELATED TO THE ANIMAS RIVER
3.5.1 Other Uses River Park /Greenway
The river supports many uses. River improvements should be designed to enhance
as many of the following activities as practicable:
a)
b)
C)
d)
e)
f)
g)
h)
Page 6 of
ttp: // web .durangogov.org:88 /isysquery /3 e5177b6- 9341 - 4802- 9b32- 9da5120e9f66/6/doc/ 2/9/200
