Durango Herald Online
--
Barry Spear, a lawyer who represents the Southwest Water Conservation District, said the district does not oppose the city's
effort to secure recreational water rights, but a balance with other water users is needed.
"We have told the city we don't think it was necessary," Spear said.
By applying for in- channel diversion rights, Ledger said the city is looking out for its future economic and recreational interests.
The city, he noted, has 16,000 permanent residents and a significant tourist population to worry about.
To individuals who argue that there is plenty of water in the Animas River for recreational uses now and in the future, Ledger
said, "If there's plenty of water, what are they worried about ?"
Contents copyright ©, the Durango Herald.
