trends in their own programs and concluded there is an immediate need for the
following facilities to meet current demands:
■ 7 youth baseball fields
■ 6 adult softball fields
■ 6 full size soccer fields (and 2 practice fields)
■ 4 sand volleyball courts
The need for these facilities is illustrated by the growth of several key City
recreation programs: the significant growth of Youth Soccer since the 1980's and
the steady participation in Adult Softball. In 2000, there were 956 children
participating in the City's Youth Soccer program and 144 teams or approximately
1,728 individuals participating in Adult Softball. In addition to softball and soccer,
the demands on sports turf is increasing. Youth baseball, outdoor volleyball
leagues and tournaments (grass and sand), Ultimate Frisbee and special events
frequently compete with casual public use of the parks. Parks and Recreation staff
work closely with various community sports user groups to schedule competing
demands on limited City resources. Practices must be limited to allow games to be
played during the season and the turf is often damaged by over use.
160
120
HO
40
0
iT
it
.r
.n
a
.r
a
.ti
a
.r
a
..n
a
.r ry
1500 - - - — .._ ..... .. ... ...
i
1000
500
0
r a M to r ON c
go oe
 T ON
^ N
Adult Softball Youth Fall Soccer
Comparables with other communities are another useful tool but are more difficult
to establish with regard to recreation facilities, since most communities have
developed their own mixture of sports based on tradition and available facilities.
Durango's soccer program has reached a level that is not matched by many other
communities of a comparable size. An increased LOS specifically for softball,
baseball and soccer fields would address overuse and limitations on field
availability. The existing LOS is not meeting the demand presently in our
community and, therefore, an increased LOS is recommended.
2.4.4 Other Desired Facilities
Through the public input process a number of other desired facilities were
identified. The interest in these facilities was strong enough to consider for
inclusion in future park development. They include:
➢ BMX (pedal dirt bike) course
➢ Ice rink
➢ Golf course
➢ Equestrian center
➢ Outdoor water park
➢ Indoor /outdoor tennis complex
➢ Additional whitewater play features
' x „.tditK- .(Ji <j±k '()f '.., ¢ i'.y+ > /ref+, °..,. , )L .I y, 'l >' b`kRi. •4 1 t
Iralog ;4'arlcg.F't>t>z{ +,. <Y +' {. °' ±'
