Prohibit improvements or new structures unless they are <br />clearly in keeping with the overall objectives of the wild <br />river area classification and management. The design for <br />any permitted construction must be in conformance with the <br />approved management plan for that area. Additional habita- <br />tions or substantial additions to existing habitations will <br />not be permitted. <br />5. Implement management practices which might include con- <br />struction of minor structures Lt'► pl ►rotection from fire, <br />ment of fish and game habitat; grazing; p <br />insects, or disease; rehabilitation or stabilization of damaged <br />resources, provided the area will remain natural appearing and <br />the practices or structures will harmonize with the environ- <br />ment. Such things as trail bri.dyes, an occasional fence, <br />natural - appearing water diversions, ditches, flow measuremej ►t <br />or other water management devices, and similar facilities may <br />be permitted if they are unobtrusive and do not have a signi- <br />ficant direct and adverse effect on the natural character of <br />the area. <br />Scenic River Areas <br />The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act states that scenic rivers: <br />1. Are "free of impoundments" <br />2. Are "accessible in places by road" <br />3. Have "shorelines or watersheds still largely <br />loped" <br />primitive and shorelines larg el y <br />0 Classification criteria. <br />1. An "impoundment" is a slack water pool formed by any man- <br />made structure. Except in rare instances in which esthetic <br />and recreational characteristics are of such outstanding <br />quality as to counterbalance the disruptive nature of an im- <br />poundment, such features will not be allowed on scenic river <br />areas. Future construction of such structures that would have <br />a direct and adverse effect on the values for which that river <br />area was included in the national system as determined would <br />Secretary charged with the administration of the area, <br />not be permitted. in the case of rivers added to the national <br />IM <br />
