I•
1996 Wannwater Angler Survey
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Survey MethodologX
• The survey findings are based on telephone interviews with 300 residents of Mesa,
Montrose, Delta and Garfield counties who were licensed to fish in Colorado during
1995, and who were determined to have spent at least one day in 1995 fishing for
warmwater fish. The respondents' names were selected randomly from lists provided by
the Colorado Division of Wildlife.
• The interviews were conducted during the month of January, 1996.
• The survey findings have a maximum margin of error of plus or minus 5.7 %.
Profile of Warmwater Anglers
•
:7
• The typical warmwater angler in the study spent 16.4 days fishing in Colorado during
1995, of which 4.4 days were spent fishing for warmwater fish.
• The median age of those surveyed was 39.5 years, and four in five (79%) were men.
Warmwater Fishing Preferences
• Catfish (36%) and largemouth bass (25%) are the warmwater fishes sought most by
western Colorado warmwater anglers. The largest percentage of anglers (40%) visit
large reservoirs for warmwater catches, but the Colorado River (28%), small reservoirs
(27%), and gravel pits and ponds are also popular (22%).
•
• Roughly two - thirds (63%) of the warmwater anglers surveyed are satisfied with the
warmwater fishing opportunities near them, but, nonetheless, most would welcome
additional venues, especially large reservoirs within an hour's drive of home.
Response to Pond Reclamation Project
• At the present time, warmwater anglers are not well - informed about the proposed project.
The largest percentage (48 %) knew nothing about the project before being surveyed,
while one in three (33%) report having "a little" knowledge. Fewer than one in five
• (19 %) report knowing "a lot" about the project.
L
