WATER <br />CONSERVATION BOARD <br />Dear Reader: <br />In Reel K. lcr I o <br />2320 <br />• <br />ti +�r Fda�f <br />For over a decade the Forest Service has been) reviewi�.g the <br />Uncompahgre and Wilson Mountains Primitive Areas and contiguous <br />lands of the San Juan and Uncompahgre National Forests, Colorado, <br />for suitability and non - suitability for their inclusion in the <br />National Wilderness Preservation System. This brochure sets forth <br />the review made pursuant to the Multiple Use - Sustained Yield Act <br />of June 12, 1960, and the Wilderness Act of September 3, 1964. <br />A public hearing record will be compiled between January 11 and <br />February 15, 1974. The record will be open to receive written and <br />oral comments on the proposal. Persons wishing to express their <br />views on these or other management proposals are invited to submit <br />written statements before February 15, 1974, to the Regional Forester, <br />Building 85, Denver Federal Center, Denver, Colorado 80225. Oral <br />statements will also be taken beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, January 11, <br />1974, at the Ouray High School gymnasium, Ouray, Colorado, and con- <br />tinuing at 9 a.m, on January 12, 1974, at the Ramada Inn, 718 Horizon <br />Drive, Grand Junction, Colorado. The purpose of this public hearing <br />record is to set forth testimony on management possibilities and the <br />subsequent formulation of recommendations for the management of the <br />Uncompahgre and Wilson Mountains Primitive Areas and contiguous <br />lands. <br />The hearing record will be considered in formulating the recommenda- <br />tions of the Secretary of Agriculture to the President and to Congress. <br />The review of the Uncompahgre and Wilson Mountains Primitive Areas <br />and contiguous lands identified four representative management alter- <br />natives which are considered feasible and practical. These are <br />described in this brochure. The management proposals reflect repre- <br />sentative management arrangements. They have been identified to <br />facilitate your analysis and stimulate thinking as to modifications <br />and other alternatives. Other management alternatives mentioned in <br />the brochure were discarded as not being feasible or practical. You <br />may have others you wish to enter into the Record for consideration. <br />
