DEDICATION
This report is dedicated to the memory of Steven Rekemeyer and also to his parents, Ellie and
Peter. Rekemeyer. Steve lost his life while on the job during this project
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Many seasonal and permanent employees of the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) and
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were involved in the collection of field data for this study. My
sincere appreciation is extended to Claire Landry. Claire's assistance in scheduling and supervising
backwater seining trips and fish identification was invaluable. She also participated in most
electrofishing field trips and provided sound technical assistance and advice. Tom Nesler and Bill
Elmbald of the CDOW provided guidance and advice during initial periods of the project. I also
thank U. S. Fish and Wildlife personnel Frank Pfeiffer, Chuck McAda, Bob Burdick and Doug
Osmundson for constructive information and ideas during the course of the study. Doug Osmundson
promptly shared fish data collected at Una, Colorado, which was used in population estimates in this
report. Frank Pfeifer graciously provided the use of an electrofishing raft and other field equipment
which greatly facilitated data collection. Virtually the entire staff of Area 7 participated in
electrofishing the Colorado River. Special thanks is extended to area supervisor Steve Yamashita and
DWMs Perry Will, Don Crane, Renzzo Del Piccolo, Jim Miller, Paul Creeden, Joe Gumber, Terry
Mathieson, John Broderick, and wildlife technician Glen Loucks and Bill Summerville. The Rifle
Hatchery also provided much needed labor on electrofishing expeditions. Thanks to Dave "Doc"
Capwell for adjusting schedules and donating to the effort. Personnel from Rifle Hatchery were Gary
Dowler (the power - netter), Dawn Kelly and Craig Mergelman. CDOW temporaries Bruce Bonner
and Pete Vanderbilt were oarsmen for the rafts. Much of the identification of YOY fish was done
by the careful eye of Earl Williams. Temporary employees on the field crew included Gary Spinuzzi,
Steve Rekemeyer, Steve States, Noel Guerrie, Chuck Hoffman, Nicky Schmalz, and Mike Tidwell.
Volunteer help was also used on several field trips. Aerial videography was done by Kathy Fenton
of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. I also greatly appreciate the reviews of Kevin Bestgen, David
Irving and Doug Osmundson.
Vi
