 I
Lake Powell into the river that started in 1995. Also in 1995, a study to evaluate the potential for
mechanical removal of channel catfish with hoop nets was initiated, but success was poor so the
study was not continued in 1996, although most nonnative species continue to be mechanically
removed whenever they are captured during Program activities.
5.5. Determine the Occurrence, Extent, and Role(s) of Water Quality Degradation
and Contaminants in the Decline of the Endangered Fish Species and Identify
and Implement Corrective Actions.
A number of studies examined both water quality and contaminant issues related to rare fish. A
historical review of contaminants has been completed. The historical review reported that selenium
and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were the most likely contaminants for the fish
community. Studies of the toxicity of water in the San Juan Basin to native fish have shown that
water quality (contaminants) in some tributaries have the potential to affect Colorado squawfish,
razorback sucker, and flannelmouth sucker.
5.6. Implement an Information and Education Program to Increase Public
Awareness about Endangered Fish Species and Threats to Their Habitats.
An information and education program has not been developed for the Program, but planning for this
activity will be included in long range budgeting after the 7 -year research effort is completed.
5.7. Implement and Maintain an Adaptive Management Program to Ensure Conduct
of Appropriate Research and Management Activities to Attain and Maintain
Recovery of Endangered Fish Species. The Biology Committee Will Meet as
Frequently as Necessary, but at Least Annually, to Evaluate Research
Activities, Management Actions, and Recovery Strategies to Refine and
Improve the Program for the Endangered Fish Species of the San Juan River
Basin.
Adaptive management has been an important part of the Program since it was initiated. Research,
which has been the main focus of the Program to date, has been adjusted as new information has
been gained. Because much of the research is based on comparison of results among years, several
years of study are needed before accurate conclusions can be reached. This Summary Report is one
of the components of a good, adaptive management program as it provides an overall review of the
success, or lack thereof, of the Program. A peer review panel was formed in 1997 and will be used
as results of the Program are developed. An integrated, GIS -based database of all physical and
biological data has been developed and is being used by Program researchers to analyze data that has
been collected.
Recommendations
Many of the recommendations made in previous summary reports have been incorporated into the
research effort. As the 7 -year research effort draws to a close, integration and analysis of the data
collected during that period is a priority.
San Juan River Recovery Implementation Program December 1997
Summary Report IV PR -602 -1
