has a recurrence interval of about 1.5 years (Gordon et al 1992). The 1.5 year peak flow
on the Yampa River at Maybell is 8,463 cfs. The median, 50% exceedence, or 2 -year
peak flow recorded on the Maybell gage is 10,000 cfs and the ten year flood is 14,634
cfs. In 1996 the peak flow was 14,700 cfs and it was 16,400 in 1997. Figure 2. displays
the annual hydrographs for the 90 %, 80 %, 50 %, 20% and 10% exceedence flows. These
flows indicate the frequency that a flow will exceed that value, e.g. in one out of ten years
flows have exceeded the 10% curve.
Currently, approximately 110,000 AF of water is depleted for out -of -river use per
year, about 10% of the total annual yield. Ninety percent, 80 %, 70 %, 60 % and 50 %
exceedence flows are give for the base flow period in Figure 3. The lowest flow typically
occurs in September, a time with dry natural conditions and high demand for water
diversion. The 50% exceedence or median flow year had a minimum flow of 174 cfs. In
four of five years (20% exceedence) the minimum flow exceeds 81 cfs and in nine 9 of
ten years (10% exceedence) the minimum flow is 66 cfs.
5
