AFS, to the 115th Annual AFS Meeting (published abstract) nd in an MS thesis. <br />A follow -up study was planned in which. whitefish and tropt populations would be <br />manipulated to further clarify relationships. A suitable udy site was not located, <br />and the study was abandoned. <br />Catch - and - Release Angling Regulations M rWP asked White to direct an <br />on -going study on the effects of catch -a nd -r ease angling on a stream cutthroat <br />trout population which ha/been en fishe or 45 years. Two years of catch -and- <br />release angling did not reundan e or average size of cutthroat trout, even <br />though some individual tr ca ht more than 10 times annually. The study <br />provided further evidencv erability of this species to angling. Habitat <br />use data will be valuable tion to instream flow recommendations for this <br />species in other parts of . Important winter habitat use information was <br />also collected. This woresented at the MT Chapter AFS Meeting, (Best <br />Student Paper) at the 11al Meeting AFS, in a technical report (36), and <br />an MS thesis. <br />Growth Interruption s a Means of Mass- marking Hatche Trout: Wyoming <br />Game and Fish De artment asked White to help design a study to evaluate the <br />potential use of growth interruptions as a means of mass - marking hatchery trout. <br />The study appli d Optical Pattern Recognition System technology to "read" marks <br />/nsiv l Five combinations of feeding rates and temperature were tested <br />d eight the following year. Changes in feeding regime and water <br />e effectively altered circuli spacing on treatment trout scales. Marks <br />to accurately predict fish group origin, constituting a simple <br />, efficient, and harmless method of mass - marking trout in a hatchery <br />sults were presented in an MS Thesis, at the Western Division AFS <br />d NAJFM (18). t <br />Large Rivers /Rare Fish Species <br />Sturgeon - Soon after transfer to Montana, White began seeking funds to conduct <br />research on pallid sturgeon and paddlefish in the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers. <br />In 1992, 1 -year after pallid sturgeon were listed as endangered, FWS funding <br />became available. A Ph.D. student and White are doing research on habitat use <br />and movement of adult pallid and shovelnose sturgeon. The research is in <br />cooperation with Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologists who <br />captured and radio tagged most experimental fish. This is the first in -depth habitat <br />use study of pallid sturgeon in a relatively unaltered riverine environment. <br />Because, pallid sturgeon are rare, the abundant shovelnose sturgeon is being <br />studied to determine if habitat selection is similar enough for this species to be <br />used as a surrogate. A paper was presented at the 124th Annual AFS Meeting in <br />Halifax, Nova Scotia, August 1994 and a PhD Dissertation is being written. <br />31 <br />
