C? <br />r`" point is not good, partly because of oilfield wastes contaminating the flow <br />M of tributaries upstream and also because of highly mineralized inflow <br />IU from salt marshes on tributaries near Hutchinson, as well as the industrial <br />40 waste from salt works. Mineralization continues to increase downstream due <br />'j to inflow from streams carrying oilfield, industrial, and municipal wastes <br />as well as natural sodium chlorides. <br />No municipal supplies are obtaiined directly from the Arkansas River in <br />Kansas or Oklahoma. Supplies are pumped from the alluvium for Hutchinson <br />and Arkansas City; from a deep aquifer for Garden City; and from glacial <br />outwash filling a buried valley, for Wichita, where pumping for the munici- <br />pal supply alone averages about 30 million gallons per day. There are <br />also several important ground -water developments for irrigation all along <br />the valley from the Colorado State line to Great Bend. <br />Studies of rainfall records in Kansas indicate <br />rainfall for the period of stream -flow records fro m <br />same as the mean for the period from 1890 to date, <br />the low rainfall of the 1930's is nearly matched by <br />1890ts and 1910 - <br />that the mean annual <br />1923 is about the <br />and it is noted that <br />drought periods in the <br />2 -3 <br />
