Management practices plus enduring irrigation <br />systems improvements. <br />Other alternatives considered, but did not adequately address <br />problems, included: <br />a.) canal lining <br />b.) change from surface systems to center pivots <br />c.) purchase of irrigation rights from land owners <br />Project Purposes <br />The primary purposes are (1) (agricultural water management) - <br />reduce negative water quality impacts to surface and groundwater, <br />including the Arkansas River from selenium, sediment, salts and <br />nitrate loading; (2) (agriculture water management) - improve <br />application uniformity; (3) (watershed protection) - protect the <br />soil resource base from excessive irrigation induced erosion and <br />sedimentation. <br />Principal Project Measures: <br />It is expected that 108 long -term land treatment contracts will <br />be written during the project's life. Approximately 26,700 acres <br />will be treated through project action. <br />Practices to be installed for this project action include: <br />26,700 acres with irrigation water management, <br />nutrient and pest management. <br />8,800 acres of conservation tillage, crop residue use & <br />polyacrylamides <br />149,610 ft. of ditch lining <br />213,710 ft. of pipelines <br />3,300 ac. of land leveling <br />48 water control structures <br />56 appurtenant structures <br />10 multipurpose mitigation ponds <br />20 acres of wetland habitat development <br />3 <br />
