„T as Vegas SUN: Plan to pipe water to Vegas spurs White Pine County recall drive Page 2 of 2
Opponents characterize the Southern Nevada Water
Authority's filing in 1989 of 147 water rights
applications in Lincoln and White Pine counties as a
water grab.
Garrett said she and others don't want White Pine to
follow neighboring Lincoln County, which agreed to
let the Southern Nevada Water Authority draw water
to supply future growth in the Las Vegas area.
"When do we start conserving seriously rather than
spending billions of dollars on a pipeline for who
knows how much water ?” she said.
The water authority has a 10 -year plan calling for a
$1 billion pipeline to White Pine County, 200 miles
north of Las Vegas.
To force a recall, they must collect at least 766
signatures against Sears and 899 signatures each
against Norcross and Provost by July 2.
White Pine County Clerk Donna Bath told the Las
Vegas Review - Journal that if the signature - gathering
drive succeeds, she wants to combine a recall with
the Sept. 7 primary election to reduce costs.
A five -year drought in the Colorado River basin has
accelerated plans for Las Vegas to tap groundwater
from rural mountain valleys.
Currently, the Las Vegas area gets about 90 percent
of its water from Lake Mead, but Nevada has
reached its limit under Colorado River water - sharing
agreements.
Information from: Las Vegas Review - Journal
Printable text version I Mail this to a friend
Las Vegas SUN main page
Problems or questions
Read our policy on privacy and cookies.
