Summit Daily News for Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper and Frisco Colorado - News
9
Frisco kayak park closer to reality
LORY POUNDER
Niar h 24, 2007
Summit County, CO Colorado
FRISCO - Construction is expected to begin in the fall to create a
whitewater feature for kayakers in Ten Mile Creek near the
trailhead parking lot.
The ideal dates for use, because of the water run -off, will be from
May through July and the goal is for it to be ready next spring,
said Jocelyn Mills, senior planner with the Town of Frisco.
Summit Daily /Mark
Fox Tenmile Creek
near the footbridge at
the bike path and the
west end of Main
Street Frisco where a
kayak park is being
proposed.
To create the whitewater feature, rocks will be reconfigured and bank improvements are planned. Basically, it involves
making a "more fun feature for kayakers ... more of a challenge," Mills said, adding that it will likely improve fishing as
well.
The project will not change the level or appearance of the creek, but it involves restructuring a fish habitat that was built
there in the early 90s, she said.
About three years ago, the idea for the project came up and the town has been working ever since to get the necessary
permits. Currently, they are waiting for Colorado Department of Transportation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
approvals. Town officials are hoping to have both in hand by this summer, Mills said.
Bidding is expected to take place this summer for this first phase, and Frisco Town Council has allocated $100,000 in
the budget for the Ten Mile Creek Kayak Park.
The second phase of the project would involve putting in a second whitewater feature. However, it would require an
approval from homeowners adjacent to the project. This part is farther up the creek toward the pedestrian bridge, Mills
said.
Town officials will be working with the Woodbridge Home Owners Association to find out if they will be able to
proceed with the second phase of the project, Mills said. Each part was designed as a stand alone feature in case it
doesn't go through.
Another project with Ten Mile Creek that town officials are looking into is a trail along the creek. They are just in the
beginning stages of the project that will also involve talking to nearby property owners.
Currently, during the summer months, there is an informal trail along this section of the creek from West Main Street to
Madison Avenue.
Lory Pounder can be reached at (970) 668 -4628, or at 1pourlder. )su
BACK
http: / /www. summitdaily.com/ apps /pbcs.dll /article ?AID= /20070324/NEWS/ 103240092 &te... 3/26/2007
