The Canon City
Council accepted the grant this past week.
Last year, local boaters teamed up with the Canon City
Chamber of Commerce to start the process of fundraising for
the park, affectionately nicknamed "WKRP -Canon City." It is
planned for the section of the Arkansas River that runs along
Centennial Park, also known as Duck Park.
Large boulders will be added to the river and the waterway
will be shaped to create holes and chutes for kayakers,
similar to the whitewater course in Pueblo.
M %
k
x
Proposed design of the Whitewater
Kayak & Recreation Park
"There will be a great view of it from the riverwalk trail and
people will be able to watch the kayakers play in the holes
and practice their rolls," said Will Colon, an organizer. "It also
will offer more user friendly access to the river without
getting into quick current immediately."
Colon said he believes the park could be used for boating
festivals, filling neighboring Centennial Park with people. He
sees it as a boon to the local tourism economy.
As it is now, the river is wide and the current slow as it runs
along the park. Picnickers often sit at riverside tables in
Centennial Park where enormous cottonwood trees offer
ample shade.
A pedestrian bridge spans the river at Centennial Park,
connecting it with the Depot Park and providing a bird's -eye
view of the river.
City Administrator Steve Rabe said the grant helps with the
overall fundraising effort.
"They almost had raised the amount needed for the
estimated $33,000 to $34,000 cost of the draft design, so
with this grant, they will be able to roll much of that amount
an ad whatever
The View
One click to read
The Pueblo West
View Online!
2 of 3 3/10/2008 9:57 AM
