Current Use of the Course
The Golden course is truly a world class whitewater course that has been very popular and hosted
numerous events since its completion. Many people have enjoyed the course year -round for all
types of whitewater boating. At lower flows, the course is mainly used for beginners and novices
to practice their skills on moving water. The higher (500 to 1200 cfs) flows attract the largest
number of paddlers and the course becomes the whitewater attraction that it was designed to be.
To date, numerous events have been held at the course, including the Clear Creek
Whitewater Festival, the Open Canoe National Championships, the Junior Olympic Slalom events,.
and the Eddie Bauer International Whitewater Slalom competition, as well as numerous regional
whitewater rodeo events. These events have attracted competitors from around the country and
the world. The events have been very successful due to the fact of the high -flow characteristics of
the course, creating a challenging, attractive and varied course for the expert competitors.
The course is also heavily used by local and out -of -state paddlers on a daily basis. The
parking lot is usually near capacity in the early summer months with people from many areas. The
project has also been advertised in national paddling magazines and on the Internet.
Future Plans for the Course
I was also authorized by Golden to design and construct an extension of the Whitewater
Course immediately downstream and adjacent to the completed Course discussed above. That
extension has been designed, but is not yet built. As designed, the extension will divert and
control the flow of water and will also be at its optimum and provide the best boating experience
at high flow rates of up to 1,000 cfs for the reasons and as discussed above.
Optimal Flow Rate
For the reasons stated above, it is my opinion that the Clear Creek Whitewater Course is
the optimum at high flows up to 1000 cfs. Water to that amount as it is controlled and diverted
throughout the course is not wasted. These conclusions hold for both the Whitewater Course and
the Course extension.
