The Gunnison Whitewater Park <br />Background <br />Figure 1. The location of the Gunnison Whitewater Park before construction began. <br />My involvement with the Gunnison Whitewater Park began in 1997 -98 when I attended <br />public meetings held by Gunnison County and did site visits to determine the feasibility of the <br />project. There was substantial public interest in the whitewater park within the community. <br />The selected reach of whitewater possessed adequate gradient, adequate historical flows and <br />sufficient streambed dimensions to create a good Whitewater Park Figure 1 shows the selected <br />reach of the Gunnison River before construction began on the park. In 1999 REP was hired by <br />Gunnison County to work on the preliminary design and permitting of the project. <br />There was strong interest in the community for a course that would be used by a wide <br />spectrum of users. The design intent stated by Gunnison County and UGRWCD was to create <br />a Whitewater Park with features that were attractive to all levels of users. These users would <br />7 <br />
