Subj: Grand Junction Daily Sentinel Article
Date: 04/18/2002 8:23:36 AM Mountain Daylight Time
From: AColosimo@csu.org
To: SNewell @csu.org, hmiskel @aol.com, mpifher @troutlaw.com
With the Daily Sentinel covering this issue, there might be opportunity
for a editorial and cover for McInnis?? ??
04.17.02 Fryingpan won't add to reservoirs
By ZACK BARNETT The Daily Sentinel
GLENWOOD SPRINGS ? Additional water from
the Fryingpan River
would not flow into two Front Range
reservoirs even if Congress approves
their expansion, a Colorado Springs water
official told the board of the
Colorado River District on Tuesday during
a quarterly meeting.
A bill in the House of Representatives
would allow the Bureau of
Reclamation to study the expansion of
Pueblo and Turquoise reservoirs.
House Bill 3881 would also allow officials
to manage differently the water in
the lakes.
The Fryingpan - Arkansas Project collects
water from the tributaries of the
Fryingpan and Roaring Fork rivers and
tunnels it under the Continental
Divide to Turquoise Reservoir, where it is
stored for use by the city of
Colorado Springs.
The bill, however, would not allow
additional water to be moved from the
Fryingpan River into the Arkansas River
basin.
Among the bill's supporters is the
Southeastern Colorado Water District.
The district holds rights to water from
the Fryingpan - Arkansas Project.
The district usually diverts about half
of what it is legally allowed from the
Fryingpan, said district General Manager
Steve Aneschoug.
But even if Congress were to approve
expansion of the dams, additional
waters from the Fryingpan would not flow
into them, Arveschoug said.
Thursday, April 18, 2002 America Online: HMlskel Page: 1
