More than half of the rocky riverbed was
exposed to the hot sunshine as the narrow green river curled its way toward Downtown.
Even so, it was an appropriate setting for the ceremony as Pueblo's City Council signed an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers to begin work on the $8 million Arkansas River Corridor Legacy Project - a massive effort that will rehabilitate the river
channel, improve the fishery and even build a recreational boating course Downtown.
"It's a historic day for Pueblo," Council President Mike Occhiato told the small crowd of dignitaries on hand for the signing. "This project
will bring new recreational, aesthetic and environmental benefits to our community."
The legacy project is a partnership that includes the city, Pueblo County, Army Corps of Engineers, Great Outdoors Colorado, Pueblo
Conservancy District and numerous smaller organi7arions, such as the Nature Center and the Pueblo Zoo.
The bulk of the project money will come from the federal government -$4.2 million. Great Outdoors Colorado is contributing $2 million
and the city and county are contributing $400,000 each.
http: / /www. chieftain .com / print /archive /2002iapr /19 /ni5.htm 04/19/2002
