electrical fires within the subject property or adjacent properties. The resulting damage
is generally not covered under home-owner insurance policies, potentially increasing the
District's liability.
The No Action Alternative will result in continued difficulties for the District. Ultimately,
such exposure may cause even greater problems such as boil orders, mandatory water
use restrictions, and increased legal responsibility.
Alternative No. 1— Canterbury Pump Station and Delivery Pipeline to the Evans
Gulch Water Treatment Plant
Alternative No. 1 involves the installation of a vertical bore, or well, into the tunnel at a
location where the tunnel is believed to be sound. Enclosed as Figure No. 4 is a
geological profile and plan view of the tunnel prepared for professional paper No. 235,
published by the USGS. A pump would be installed in the well to withdraw water from
the tunnel. A pipeline would be installed to convey the tunnel water to the Evans Gulch
Reservoir and Evans Gulch Water Treatment Plant.
A location has been selected for the installation of the vertical bore into the tunnel. This
location is near an abandoned shaft known as the Roseville Shaft and is approximately
1,600 feet from the tunnel portal. According to the geologic profile, the shaft is located in
the portion of the tunnel driven through a hard rock formation. At this location, the depth
to the tunnel is approximately 250 feet. After the tunnel is located using small diameter
test holes, a larger diameter hole, or well, would be drilled that would allow for
installation of a vertical turbine pump. It is anticipated that this bore would be about 20
to 24 inches in diameter.
A small enclosure would then be constructed over the well that would house the pump
and electrical equipment. The size of this building would be approximately 200 square
feet. Preliminary plans are to install a pre-engineered masonry building. Power would
be provided to the site by running a distribution line from an existing nearby XCEL power
transmission line. Access to the well site would be provided by an existing roadway that
_J W. W. Wheelsr ond Assoclotas, lnc. 5/19/2010 Final
— 1 Watar flesourcas Enginsars Page 15
