New Dams Plan Could Go On February Ballot - Print This Story News Story - KCRA Sa... Page 1 of 1
KCRA.com
New Dams Plan Could Go On February Ballot
Recent Factors Bring New
Urgency To Water Debate
POSTE _: i
SACRAMENTO -- Voters could have a chance as early as
February to vote on a plan that could have a major impact on
California's water future.
During a news conference Monday on the shores of the San 'CA video: Governor Outlines
Luis Reservoir in Merced County, Gov. Arnold water Plan
Schwarzenegger said that if a deal can be reached with
lawmakers, a bond measure could be added to the ballot for the
Feb. 5 primary.
The ballot would let the voters decide whether to spend billions of dollars to build dams and a canal to
divert water around the Sacramento -San Joaquin Delta.
Several factors have combined to give new urgency to the debate over the state's water future.
State and federal courts ruled in the spring that water - pumping operations in the delta are killing fish,
forcing temporary shutdowns that cut the flow of water to cities, farms and reservoirs.
Last week, state demographers released projections showing California's population soaring to 60 million by
2050, a number that would put yet more pressure on the state's water system.
Copyright 2007 by The Asso P ress .
