.
continued support from other local, state, and/or federal sources. Periodic samples of TDS,
specific salt ions, and dissolved Se and U will be available from a subset of river locations within
the study regions of the LARB from the CSU project fiznded by the CWQCD.
Task 3b: River Water Quality Sampling & River Flow Measurement in the UARB
About 3 to 5 locations along the river in the new UARB study region will be selected for EC,
temperature, pH, DO, and ORP measurement on a bi-weekly to monthly interval. At 3 to 5
times annually, grab samples also will be taken at these locations for analysis of specific ions,
Se, U, and perhaps other minerals in the laboratory following CWQCD protocol. Where
possible, sampling will be located at or very near existing flow gauging locations. These
gauging locations would include the USGS gauges at Granite (near confluence with Clear Creek)
and near Nathrop (near confluence with Chalk Creek) and the CDWR gauge at Salida. At
sampling locations that are not near existing gauge sites or when gauges are not operational
during the winter (yet ice cover does not prohibit measurement), simultaneous streamflow
measurements will be made using acoustic Doppler velocimeters (ADV) or acoustic Doppler
velocity profilers (ADCP). Simultaneous stream flow measurements also will be made 3 to 6
times per year at sampling sites near existing stream gauges to check the accuracy of flow rating
equations at those gauges.
Task 4: Measurement of Tributary, Drain, and Canal Flows and Water Quality
Task 4a: Tributary, Drain, and Canal Water Quality Sampling in the LARB
The analysis of flows and water quality also will consider irrigation canals and drains as well as
tributary streams within the study regions. Values of EC, temperature, pH, DO, and ORP will be
measured at 30 to 50 selected locations along major canals, drains, and tributaries in the
Upstream Study Region and at 30 to SO locations in the Downstream Study Region of the LARB
following CWQCD protocol. These sites have already been established under earlier work in the
LARB. Under the proposed project, measurements will be made only bi-monthly to monthly.
Simultaneous flow measurements with ADVs and ADCPs will only be made occasionally at
some of these sites under the support of this project. Instead, flow rates at the times of EC,
temperature, pH, DO, and ORP measurements will be estimated from nearby existing USGS and
CDWR gauging sites. Other pending projects, subject to on-going funding, will support more
frequent sampling at these locations. In addition, periodic samples for TDS, specific salt ions, Se
and U concentration will be available from a subset of about 30 locations in canals, drains, and
tributaries in the LARB under a CSU project funded by the CWQCD.
Task 4b: Tributary, Drain, and Canal Water Quality Sampling & Flow Measurement in the UARB
Similar water quality samples will be taken from waterways within the new study region of the
UARB following CWQCD protocol. Initially, we plan to conduct coincident EC, temperature,
pH, DO, ORP, and flow measurements at 8 to 12 selected tributary and drain locations in the
s
