<br />The City aF Salida supparts the application af the Upper Arkansas Waier Conservancy District (the
<br />Distriot ar UAWCD) for a Fi?ater Stipply Resei•vc Accutrtr1 grant fram the Arkansas Basin Roundtable. The
<br />Dislrict's project involves a joinl UAWCD-U.S. Geological Serviee (IJSGS) hydralogic water batance
<br />study. The phased study begins in Chaffee County and eventualty covers four Arkansas headwaters
<br />counties; Lake, Chaffee, Fremont, and Custer.

<br />by the UAWCD-USGS hydrologic water
<br />balance study will allow the District to deal
<br />with growing water needs for this 72%

<br />Salida reeognizes that StAte funds to assist this small District strategically located at the headwaters of tlie
<br />Arkansas itiver will benefit the publie beyond Aistrict boundaries. The study will generate data that can
<br />be used 6y all basin river users whether municipal, agricultural or recreational. For instance, this study
<br />invalves Che faur counties - Lake, Chaffee, Frernont, Custer - that comprise the popular tourist area
<br />known as the hcadwaters of the Arkansas River. According to the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area
<br />{AHRA}, this stretch of river is the most heavily wiiitewater rafted river in the world. AHRA annual use
<br />data retlects that - 800,000 people pass lhrough its area each year.
