facilities, have provided broodstock managers from throughout the
country the opportunity to interact and exchange-ideas concerning
both old and new management techniques. As a result of these
workshops, the field of broodstock management has begun to place
increased emphasis on not simply maintaining the present quality of
broodstocks, but rather on increasing both broodstock quality and
performance. It is hoped this handbook will provide a foundation
from which such efforts can continue to be expanded.
Inland Salmonid Broodstock Management Handbook is intended to be a
fairly comprehensive manual on broodstock management practices for
inland salmonids, including lake trout. The information contained
in the handbook is an attempt to consolidate a majority of the
information (both "old" and "new") currently available pertaining
specifically to the culture and spawning of broodstocks. It is
intended to be of interest to all persons involved in broodstock
management, from entrance level biologists and animal caretakers to
hatchery managers . It is hoped that the handbook will serve not
only as an introductory learning source for individuals new to the
field of broodstock- management, but-also as a primary broodstock
reference source for managers seeking to improve ,their management
programs. At the very least, the handbook should provide managers
with an increased awareness of alternative methodologies that can
be used to strengthen broodstock programs. The ultimate goal of
the handbook is to function to increase the reproductive potential
and improve-the genetic integrity of broodfish, as well as to
increase the efficiency of broodstock facilities.
This handbook is not intended as an in-depth treatise on all of the
"dogs" and "don'ts" of broodstock management. Everyone with even
only limited experience in broodstock management is well aware of
the fact that protocols that work well at one facility, may or may
not, work well at another. Species, strain, water quality, rearing
conditions, etc. can all affect broodstock performance with respect
to given management procedures. This handbook is, however,
intended as a practical .guide designed to assist in the planning of
broodstock management strategy so as to maximize broodstock quality
and reproductive potential.
The handbook has been designed for distribution in loose-leaf
format, with page numbering by section. This format was selected
as it will allow for simplified incorporation of new procedures and
updated techniques as they become available. This handbook is
intended as only a starting point from which the field of
broodstock management can be enhanced as new methodologies become
available. It is hoped that private, state, and research sectors
of the broodstock arena will all contribute to future revisions of
the handbook by providing both critiques and supplemental
information. It is our intent that the Inland Salmonid Broodstock
Management Handbook will be periodically updated to contain all of
the latest material available.
xviii
David Erdahl
