New California Water Map

Members of the 1997 Waer Leaders Class

WEF's new Watershed Tour will include a
stop at Mono Lake.

18

What's New

New California Water Map
Hot off the press is the newly updated California Water Map. Widely seen in
offices, classrooms, libraries and at highway rest stops around the state, the map is
color-coded to indicate federal, state and local water projects, natural waterways,
wild and scenic rivers and saline lakes. The map portion, designed by Allan
Cartography, has a new look that features natural topography and includes irri-
gated and urbanized areas. The 24" by 36" poster contains information about
annual runoff, federal, state and local projects, wild and scenic rivers, groundwater,
the Delta and the Colorado River. The map is a valuable instructional tool for
students, water professionals and private citizens.
Copies of the map can be ordered using the order form on page 19.

New Watershed Tour Sign-ups Underway
The Foundation's new Eastern Sierras Watershed Tour is October 15~ 17.
Beginning in Reno, Nev., and ending in Burbank, Calif., the three-day tour will
explore some of the watersheds that supply California and Nevada and discuss
the concept of watershed management. Traveling south from Reno, the tour will
visit the Truckee~ Tahoe Basin, the West Walker River, Mono Lake and the
Owens Valley. Participants will spend the first night at the beautiful Mammoth
Mountain Inn.
Cost of the tour per person is $500 paid by Sept. 12, $550 after Sept. 12,
and for two people sharing a room, $900 paid by Sept. 12, $1,050 after Sept. 12.
Contact Valerie Holcomb for more information.

Back to School
The Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2nd Annual Water Leaders
Class. The year-long program identifies young community leaders from diverse
backgrounds and educates them about water issues. The class begins January 1998,
and the deadline to apply is Oct. 15.
Criteria for acceptance include a commitment to understanding water
issues, an intent to seek political or public service leadership roles, demonstrated
commitment to the community through volunteer activities, and potential for
advancement to leadership roles within their own organizations. The program is
primarily funded by grants with partial support from tuition fees. Tuition is $1,000;
some scholarships are available. Contributors to the 1997 class were BankAmerica
Corp., CH2M Hill, Southern California Edison and Sun American Financial.
The curriculum is based on Foundation materials and class members are
expected to attend two, three-day water tours, the March Executive Briefing,
a special one-day class briefing, and spend a day "shadowing" a water leader,
interviewing that leader and writing a report on the interview.
There is a $25 application fee. Contact the Foundation for more information.

'Tis the Season

Looking for a holiday greeting card? The Foundation can help. Four cards featur-
ing Western scenes and famous quotations about water are available. Choose from
an autumn river, North Lake Tahoe, the Colorado River or a winter trees scene.
The holiday message reads, "Season's greetings and best wishes for the New
Year." Orders of 100 cards or more can be personalized with a company's or
individual's name imprinted below the greeting. Cards without imprinting come
in boxes of 20. No orders for imprinted cards will be accepted after Nov. 15.
Contact Diana Farmer for more information.

Western Water
