Map of Colorado River Basin.
Until recent times, the Basin supported a unique fish fauna. Of the 36 fish species native to
the Basin, 64 percent were not found in other river basins in North America. Only eight fish
species are common to both the Upper and Lower Basin. Of these, four are listed as
endangered and two others may soon be listed. The large geographical diversity of the Basin
also supports a variety of habitats. The biodiversiry of the Basin in the past in relation to its
current diversity is central to the designation of critical habitat.
I-11
