prevent bacterial and fungal growth. After being rinsed clean, the eggs were
spread one layer deep in the incubator tray.
The goal of early collection efforts was to mate one ripe female with six
ripe males. If one ripe female and at least six ripe males were not captured
on any one given day, the fish were returned alive after a weight and
measurement were taken. If a fish's sex could not be determined upon capture,
it was returned alive after a weight and measurement were taken. After a
couple of weeks, the goal was lowered to accomodate the smaller numbers of
fish that had been captured. The new goal became to mate one ripe female with
atleast four ripe males. Ripe females and males were captured 11-13 May, the
females yielding at least 30,300+ eggs (Table 2.). The eggs were incubated
outdoors in a Heath incubator at water temperatures ranging from 14-220C,
11-23 May (Table 3.). Fungus began to appear on the eggs on 12 May. The
eggs were treated this date, and daily thereafter, with malachite green at a
concentration of 2.2 ppm to retard the fungal growth. On 21 May, 2,000 eggs
from the outdoor incubator were transferred to a indoor Heath incubator.
Water temperatures in the indoor incubator ranged between 20-210C for the next
two days. Little or no fungus appeared on the eggs held in the indoor
incubator, so the eggs were not treated with malachite green. It was found
that with cooler water temperatures of up to 200C, fungus developed on the
eggs. At water temperatures of 200C or greater, little or no fungus appeared
on the eggs (H.M. Tyus - personal communication). By 23 May, all eggs in both
the indoor and outdoor incubators appeared dead, and were deposited into pond
U. No fry were known to have hatched from these eggs.
Meanwhile, collection efforts for adult razorback suckers had resumed after
13 May, yielding primarily ripe males. On 24 May, a single ripe female was
captured at RMI 251.8 and held overnight at the Ouray NWR hatchery. The
