6. Cladaphora sp.: green algae. <br />7. Marsh: a shallow lake, the waters of which are stagnant or actuated by very feeble <br />current. In the temperate zone, they are filled with rushes, reeds, and sedge. <br />HYDROLOGY: <br />1. Riffle: a turbulent area in the river, not violent enough to be classified as a rapid, often <br />caused by cobble bars. <br />2. Run: any area of uniform smooth water. <br />3. Rapid: a very turbulent area in the river, formed by boulders from side canyons or when <br />blocks tumble from cliffs, obstructing the river and making it narrower and faster. <br />4. Isolated pool: a pool of water separated from the main river channel with no apparent <br />surficial inflow or outflow. <br />5. Backwater: a body of water with no current, attached to the main channel. <br />6. Eddy: current of water moving against the main current and with circular motion. <br />7. Side channel: a secondary river channel that deviates from the main channel only to <br />converge with the main channel later. <br />40
