and do not attempt to quantify different river habitat types (Munn and Brusven 1991, <br />Grzybkowska 1989, Grzybkowska et al. 1990). Others have been directed towards <br />specific river habitats such as riffles (Morgan et al. 1991, Rader and Ward 1988), <br />floodplains (Gladden and Smock 1990), and tailwaters of reservoirs (Swink and Novotny <br />1985). Relatively few have been directed towards multiple habitat types in a single river <br />system (Grabowski and Hiebert 1989, Beckett et al. 1983). <br />In our study, we investigated the fluctuation of benthic invertebrates, from June <br />through August 1991, in the Green River at the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge, Uinta <br />County, Utah, U.S.A. (Fig. 1) We examined sites representing four habitat types as <br />follows: River channel, ephemeral side channel, river backwater, and seasonally <br />inundated wetland. Our purpose was to determine densities and assemblages of the major <br />benthic macroinvertebrates in these four habitats associated with the Green River. <br />3
