59
Nearly all subadults were captured in backwaters. Their habitat was
represented by water less than 5 feet deep, velocities of less than 2
feet per second, and over predominantly silt substrates.
Like the subadults, the young-of-the-year squawfish were found almost
exclusively in backwaters. All of the 256 young captured were in water
less than 5 feet deep, velocities of less than 1 foot per second, and
over silt-sand substrates.
Humpback chub. - Habitat information for humpback chub was gleaned from
the capture of 96 adults, 6 juveniles, and 2 young-of-the-year. (Figure
9).
Most adult humpback chub ( 260 mm) were captured in water less than 30
feet deep, velocities of less than 1 foot per second, and over silt,
sand, boulder and bedrock substrates. These conditions describe the
habitat encountered in a few areas of the river such as Block Rocks and
Westwater Canyon. The six subadult chubs were captured in watdr 0 - 10
and 20 - 30 feet deep. This discrepancy is represented by one-year-old
fish in the 0-10 feet depth and the two and three-year-old fish in the
20-30 feet depth. All of the young humpback chub were captured in water
0-10 feet deep, less than 1 foot per second velocity and over a silt
substrate.
