37
Fish Distribution and. Population Trends
'Extensive habitat data were recorded for all captures of endangered
'fish, including the depth, velocity, and substrate at point of capture,
the location of capture, and gear employed (Tables 7 and 8).
A total of 77 juvenile and adult Colorado squawfish, 26 adult humpback
chub, 1 adult bonytail chub and 2 adult razorback sucker were collected
in the systematic sampling program. In addition, five humpback chub
were recaptured, two of which were recaptured locally; one was recaptured
3 miles away and one was recaptured 5 miles away from the initial capture_
site. - -
Colorado squawfish,-Adult Colorado squawfish were captured in all
strata, however, strata E, F, and B produced the largest numbers of
fish. Strata F and A produced by far the largest numbers of young squawfish -
(Table 9
The Green River was intensively sampled by the Special Investigative
Team from the Gates of Lodore (RM 390) to its confluence with the Colorado
River to ascertain the distribution and abundance of young-of-the-year
Colorado squawfish. A total of 1,794 young squawfish were collected
with the largest numbers per effort occurring in strata-A and F (Table
10). During this effort, care was taken to record the numbers by size
classes. of all other species found to exist with the young squawfish.
Those data will be analyzed for possible correlation with the existence
of young squawfish. One noteworthy observation is that the highest
numbers of red shiners were captured with large numbers of young squawfish, -
