29
Field identification of Gila was difficult. During the past season,
dorsal and anal ray counts (Holden et-al. 1974) were relied on to distinguish
between G. robusta, G. cypha and G. elegans. In the future, classification
of the Gila group will utilize the technique of Smith, Miller and Sable
(1979) to hopefully further differentiate the species in this group.
Special Investigations
To expand upon these rare fishes' life histories requires some very
intensive study of specific fish populations and/or 1 ndividual fishes.
Only a small beginning was made during the past year to be expanded upon
next year. -
3 _
During 1979, a broad survey of young-of-year (YOY) squawfish distribution
was carried out on the Green River to determine extent of recruitment
and general distribution. Also, a limited amount of work was done to
examine YOY utilization of backwater areas.
One team of workers is concentrating on such studies as young squawfish
distribution, diurnal movement patterns, radio tracking to determine
behavior and spawning sites, and intensive habitat work on humpback chub
populations.
Data Analysis
Due to the need to initiate field studies immediately, the first year's
data were entered on forms developed for field convenience. These data
were then transposed to a format suited to computer processing. Since
