26
Attempts were made to collect fish from every habitat present in a
sample reach. The habitat from which each fish was collected,
was described by taking a series of depth and velocity measurements and
recording the substrate over which it was collected. Bottom substrates
are classified according to the following scheme:
Silt fine gritty material
Sand less than 3mm diameter
Gravel 3 mm to 76 mm
Rubble 76 mm to 305 mm
Boulder 305 mm and larger
Bedrock rock outcropping
Water quality measurements were taken at each intensive sample site.
These include dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, air and water temperatures,
salinity and conductivity. Such variable parameters as temperature, pH
and DO were taken between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for standardization. -
The 4.5 mile reach between intensive survey sites was sampled in a more
general manner primarily by electrofishing to provide a broad cross-
section of the fish population. Physical data were collected only at
sites of rare fish captures.
Biological Measurements
Each habitat present in the intensive reaches were sampled with every
effective gear type. Rare fish captures were located to the highest
level of precision possible and water depth, velocity measurements and
the predominent substrate type recorded. All fish collections are
